Title |
Waves pound Short Beach |
Description |
Short Beach or "Missing Link." In 1933 a storm pounded the newly built Boulevard. This land bridge is the result of thousands of years of erosion between the Winthrop Highland drumlin and the adjoining Beachmont drumlin in Revere. Early European immigrants later adopted this narrow strip of road, once a Native Americans trail. In 1882 the Eastern Jct., Broad Sound Pier and Point Shirley railroad rights-of-way ran along the present road and followed the base of the Highlands and along what is presently Sewall Avenue. This railroad lasted a relatively short period of time. The tracks configuration ran precariously close to the shore and as a result sustained serious damage and never recovered. This route would be replaced by the more familiar "Winthrop loop" whose new track configuration was less exposed to the oceans furry. |
